System Administrator II

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) has an exciting opportunity for a System Administrator II. We are looking for two team members who would enjoy working for an organization that strives every day to support the public good and make a difference. This position is located in the NAIC’s Town Pavilion Office, in the heart of downtown Kansas City. This a full-time position in a positive and flexible environment. 

Responsibilities include: 

Linux Administration: 

  • Installs, configures, and maintains Linux operating systems on physical, virtual and cloud architecture. 

  • Configures and maintains network settings for physical and virtual servers. 

  • Troubleshoots issues related to backups, connectivity, and overall system performance. 

  • Schedules and performs regular maintenance in approved maintenance windows. 

  • Monitors system resources and responds to trends in utilization before problems occur. 

Red Hat JBoss Administration: 

  • Installs, configures and maintains middleware components on Red Hat Linux environments including but not limited to JBOSS EAP and Apache EWS. 

  • Monitors logs for reoccurring problems and takes corrective actions. 

  • Researches patches and identifies upgrades that are required for NAIC/NIPR environments. 

  • Maintains configuration standards across all web and application server instances. 

  • Analyzes new patch bundles and tests deployment. 

Cloud Computing Technical Duties: 

  • Manages cloud environments in accordance with company security guidelines 

  • Works in tandem with application areas to identify and implement the most optimal cloud-based solutions for the organization. 

  • Strong understanding of security best practices in AWS 

  • Adheres to Agile Process with expectations on contributing to sprints, grooming’s, retros and demos. 

  • Experience with monitoring solutions such as CloudWatch, CloudTrail and the ELK stack. 

  •  Knowledge of writing infrastructure as code (IaC) 

  • Preferred experience with Hashicorp's Vault, Atlantis and Terraform 

  • Experience using GitLab, Gitlab Pipelines and Nexus. 

  • Strong knowledge of Git and standard development workflows. 

  • Solid knowledge of AWS networking concepts using load balancers, virtual private clouds, tiered subnets and security groups. 

Secondary Functions: 

  • Attends daily standup meetings to report project status reports and communicate any problems or issues of interest during the previous day. 

  • Delivers accurate descriptive information for any problems encountered during or outside normal business hours including suspected cause and solution. 

  • Delivers detailed information for each maintenance window on the night maintenance is performed. 

Maintains accurate logging: 

  • Monitors all system logs for proper rotation. 

  • Monitors log file systems and maintain appropriate free space for log retention. 

  • Monitors daily archive of logs to audit and syslog server and reports any problems. 

Minimum Education and/or experience required: 

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Engineering and five – seven years’ experience in developing software using languages such as Java, Python, C++ or Ruby. 

Experience with SOA applications and cloud-based services. 

Experience working with OpenStack, Linux/UNIX, Rackspace, Docker and Microsoft Azure. 

Three to five years’ experience in a Cloud Engineer role or related position. 

Preferred Education and Experience: 

Master’s degree 


AWS Solutions Architect, Cloud Security Certification, and/or OpenStack Administrator Certification a plus. (Other cloud-related certification also a plus.)
