Volunteer with KC STEM Alliance | Multiple Opportunities

Posted: 08/31/2023

KC STEM Alliance relies on volunteers to fill a variety of needs, from helping with office tasks to event planning and mentoring. Both of the nationally recognized STEM programs we facilitate, Project Lead The Way and FIRST Inspires, require countless volunteers to succeed.

As the organization that connects teachers, students, and industry mentors, KC STEM Alliance is compiling our annual list of experts who are willing to serve students in online and in person mentorship roles. There are several ways to get involved: Networking + Project Mentoring: In-PERSON opportunity on 9/8/2023 at Burns & McDonnell for Engineering and Technology professionals, Project Mentor: Via email, Zoom, Teams, etc. at the time of your choosing between November 2023 - March 2024 Online, Competition Judge: ONLINE on your own time during a 9-day window between April 6-14, 2024, Project Reviewer at Senior Showcase: In-person on April 23, 2024 at Union Station.

FIRST

FIRST volunteers work with students after school in a fun, interactive setting where they can apply science and math principles to build robots. FIRST volunteers might work with grade school and middle school students involved with FIRST Lego League robotic challenges or at the high school level with the FIRST Robotics Competition, a high-energy robotics competition. In Kansas City, volunteers are critical to the FIRST tournament experience for over 3,000 students in grades K-12.
Local volunteer registration takes place through the national FIRST system. Once you register, you can search for events in Kansas and Missouri to sign up.

Mentor Makers

Research shows mentoring is a proven way to support girls and women during critical junctures in the journey to a STEM career. By matching, training and supporting Kansas City-area women interested in mentoring, Mentor Makers will build and strengthen the local STEM mentor network by concentrating on three critical phases: high school, post-secondary education and early career.

The team has been pilot testing a STEM exploration series for high school girls. Let us know if you’re interested in getting involved!
